Dear colleague,
We hope you are well and firmly settled into 2024.
In this month's newsletter, we want to draw your attention to:
Initial Teacher Training (ITT)
As your local TSH, we provide the Golden Thread of professional development to teachers across our region at all stages of their career. The first stage of this is Initial Teacher Training (ITT). From September 2024, we will be working in collaboration with a number of organisations to provide routes into teaching.
One of these routes is Teacher Apprenticeships. Teaching Apprenticeships are an ideal way for schools to either grow their own or attract high-quality applicants to the profession, whilst utilising the Apprenticeship Levy to do so. We are delighted to be working with Best Practice Network to support schools across EM3 with this.
National Professional Qualifications
Last month you may have received a letter from Damian Hinds, Minister for Schools, encouraging schools in our region to access the last fully funded round of NPQs and the associated benefits of doing so.
In our NPQ section this month, you will find information about how to apply for these NPQs, the upcoming NPQ SENCO, whilst also hearing from existing participants on how the NPQs are making a difference to them.
ECT Resources
The National Association of Teachers of Religious Education (NATRE) and our local Early Years Stronger Practice Hub at Alfreton Nursery School, are providing free resources and support to support ECTs with their practice.
Finally.....
In this month's spotlight, we have information about Forge CPD free professional development portal. In our coffee break section, you can read Ambition Institute's YouGov survey results about teachers' thoughts on professional development and what truly impacts their workload.
Kind regards,
Alan and the Potentia Team

From September 2024, we will be working in partnership with the University of Derby and Best Practice Network to offer 3 pathways to QTS, in which schools across our region can be involved.
These pathways will provide options to schools where you can nurture your own talent, access the Apprenticeship Levy to attract new or train existing staff, or work with the next generation of teachers who may be a strong fit for future vacancies.
These pathways include Teaching Apprenticeships, PGCE and Assessment Only. if you would like to know more click here.

School Placements 2024-25
As a delivery partner with the University of Derby, we organise placements for trainees on the PGCE (Primary) Provider-Led, School-Based course.
School play an essential role in ITT by hosting placements and providing mentors. Schools benefit too, from engagement in ITT, sharing expertise and nurturing the next generation of teachers.
Would you like to get involved in ITT in 2024-25? Here are two ways to do so:
- host trainees for placements
- host trainees for one or more of the new Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP) blocks.
Each ITaP block is an opportunity for trainees to focus on foundational aspects of classroom practice, supported by the University of Derby team. Trainees will engage in structured observation, deconstruction of expert practice, rehearsal and live practice, with a focus on these areas:
- Classroom management and behaviour routines
- How pupils learn and cognitive architecture
- Adaptive Teaching
- Responsive teaching and assessment
Over the year, trainees will engage in four, 5-day ITaP blocks. Each includes university-based learning with focused observations and practice in school. We are keen to hear from you if you have expert practice in school to support trainees in these ITaP blocks.
To register your interest in providing a school placement or an ITaP opportunity, please fill out our Initial Teacher Training School Engagement National Survey. If you have any questions, please contact us via itt@potentiatsh.co.uk

Teaching Apprenticeships
As we mentioned in our January newsletter, we are pleased to be working with Best Practice Network (BPN) to offer an apprenticeship route into teaching.
A teaching apprenticeship enables you to access the Apprenticeship Levy to upskill a current member of staff or to recruit a new member of staff.
BPN apprenticeships are available at both primary and secondary schools. To find out more, please click these links:

Secondary ITT Apprenticeship
If you would like to know more, please join us at our upcoming Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeship webinar (see details below).

Did you know that this may be the last time NPQs are funded?
As part of the government’s long-term education recovery plan, it was announced in May 2022 that funding for fully funded NPQ training scholarships would be available in the academic year 2023 to 2024.

Calling all Headteachers in their first 5 years!
|
|
In February 2024, we will be leading the Early Headship Coaching Offer (EHCO). The EHCO is a 12-month programme of targeted support for Headteachers/Heads of School, in their first five years of headship. It is not assessed!
This is all about helping you embed the learning from your NPQ for Headship, sharing and receiving support from your peers, gaining confidence and achieving early success in your role.
You need to be enrolled on an NPQH or have completed it to apply.

Are you in a small school with less than 150 on role?
|
|
If you are a small school with less than 150 on role, then the NPQ small may be for you!
We are working in collaboration with Church of England to provide small schools in our region with an alternative model.
The NPQ small has the same standing as the Standard NPQs but has been designed with small schools in mind.

Whilst there has been no confirmation about funding from October 2024 onwards, the DfE have confirmed that from the 2024-25 academic year, NPQ cohorts will start in October and April, rather than in October and February, with the final February Cohort being February 2024 and the first April cohort being April 2025.

Did you know NPQ SENCO was on its way?
The DfE are continuing to expand the suite of NPQs, which will include a leadership level NPQ for special educational needs co-ordinators from September 2024.
As announced in the SEND and Alternative Provision Improvement Plan, the new NPQ for SENCOs will replace the existing National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCO) as the mandatory qualification for SENCOs from Autumn 2024.
Teaching of the NPQ for SENCOs will commence in Autumn 2024. Further information on what this means for schools and SENCOs is available here.
|
|
The content framework which underpins the qualification and outlines what participants should know and be able to do after completing the NPQ for SENCOs, can be viewed here.
|
|
How do we know that we are making a difference in our delivery of NPQs?
|
|
After each of our events, we ask for feedback, so we can constantly review and improve our delivery and support.
We are delighted with the feedback that we are receiving and can assure our participants that we read every individual comment made and either pass it onto the facilitators or consider requests. One example is where a request was to send the slides before the event, so the participant has the slides to make notes. From January, we have started sending the slides in advance of delivery for participants to use as they wish.
Of the responses received so far, the following outcomes have been found -
- 97% rate the organisation as good or better.
- 98% rate the quality of the facilitation/training of this event as good or better.
- 99% feel able to apply what they've learnt in the event to their role.
- 99% feel able to apply what they've learnt in the event to their practice.
- 100% are confident that the training is helping them to build on what they already know.
- 100% are confident that the training is providing them with the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to progress in their career.
- 98% agree the Delivery Partner (Potentia TSH) responsible for delivering my training is considerate of their workload.
- 99% agree the training is delivered in a way that promotes diversity and equality of opportunity.
Education Development Trust (EDT), our lead provider, has also been ‘crunching data’ and has the following outcomes –
